We offer a myriad of performance and testing activities for students, and professional development opportunities for teachers. We maintain a teacher referral service matching MCMTA members with students in search of a music teacher. We also offer scholarships and The Margaret E. Weissenfluh Fund for students deemed worthy of financial assistance for their music lessons. The latter is based only on financial need. A meeting was held in 1964 to explore the possibility of forming a local music teachers association in Montgomery County. Montgomery County Music Teachers Association was founded in 1965 with 25 members. Over the past 35 years, the organization has grown to more than 240 members. MCMTA is the largest local association in the state of Maryland. In 1979, the association held its first benefit concert to raise funds for the purchase of a piano. A nine-foot Baldwin concert grand was purchased in 1980 and is housed at the Stone Ridge School in Bethesda. The benefit concert has continued as an annual event with noteworthy concert artists. This event helps to fund MCMTA student activities and is open to the public. Monthly member meetings were held in members' homes until 1980, at which time the meetings were moved to the Stone Ridge School, where they are held today. Each meeting includes a professional development presentation by guest artists and lecturers from all over the country. Our membership represents an exceptionally high level of professional expertise and diversity. In addition to independent private studio teachers, members include faculty members at colleges, proprietors and directors of private multi-teacher schools, active performers and lecturers, and published composers and authors of educational materials. We are dedicated to providing and promoting quality music instruction, the pursuit of musical excellence by students of all ages and levels, music appreciation in the community, and a heightened awareness by the public of the many important benefits of music study. Membership is open to Maryland State Music Teachers Association members. We invite all qualified teachers to participate in our activities and to join us in the pursuit of our goals. For
