Keyboard Musicianship Program

The Keyboard Musicianship Program is designed to develop important musical skills. The categories, called modules, are:

  • Scales/Chords/Arpeggios
  • Transposition
  • Sight Reading
  • Harmonization
  • Lead Sheet Realization
  • Improvisation
  • A summary of the 2020 Syllabus is available on the Student Activities Calendar under "Keyboard Musicianship Exam."

The testing is done on an individual basis with clear guidelines for the judge. The Scales/Chords/Arpeggios Module is required at each test and must progress to a higher level each time it is taken. A minimum of 3 modules and a maximum of 5 modules can be taken at each test, as students can take EITHER the Harmonization OR the Lead Sheet module, but not both on the same test.

A Preparatory test is also available, which is administered by each teacher in his/her own studio as a way to prepare students for the state administered examination.

Students taking the state administered exams can earn points toward awards, which come with beautiful trophies. For more information, see the Keyboard Awards document, also available on the Student Activities Calendar under "Keyboard Musicianship Exam."
